Females

Our philosophy concerning our females is real basic- every female must be an asset to the Santa Elena program or any Brahman herd.

Mature cows carrying the VL brand are the heart and the mainstay of our breeding program and a number of them are listed on the ABBA Register of Renown. We are very demanding of our females as each must meet criteria for fertility, femininity, progeny performance and structural correctness. Each Santa Elena female is typical of the American Brahman Breeder's Association Standards of Excellence criteria. Our females are solid red in color and are all big, feminine cows that stand on good feet and legs and are very correct in their total structural makeup.

Maternal traits are of utmost importance. Our cows are producers --a calf a year--and have exceptional mothering ability, fertility and are outstanding milkers. They breed easy, calve easy and keep easy. Some of our best producing females have been in our herd for more than 20 years. Santa Elena females are known for their excellent disposition and easy handling.

The big red cows of Santa Elena and the quality of their offspring have developed our standing reputation of producing quality, bred-in predictability and outstanding performance. We have multiple cows listed in the Register of Renown, plus in the Maternal Merit Award cows as we have Supreme and Elite designated females.

Most of our mature cows go back to the powerful genetics of Rio Negro, Arauto and Comas Manso. Today these cows carry the service of the new generation of Brahman greats such as Sophisticated Millionaire 80/3, Vl Rojo Grande 0/170, Vl Rojo Bravo 2/28 and Maximillion 56/3.

All our cattle are enrolled in the ABBA's Brahman Herd Improvement Records (BHIR) performance program. They also must meet ABBA's Standards of Excellence.

Another criteria of Santa Elena replacement heifers is the measurement of pelvic cavity to aid in determining each female's calving ease. Other maternal traits such as teat size, placement and udder attachment is also used for herd selection.

Our replacement heifers are evaluated on multi-trait selection involving performance, genetics, feminity, correctness, conformation and maturity. Santa Elena females reach puberty and desired breeding weight at 18 to 24 months of age, so to have their first calf at just over two-years of age. These young, beef quality females are among the most popular to visitors at Santa Elena. Their top performance, style and mothering potential are always in demand to serious cattlemen.

Santa Elena Ranch has built an impressive donor herd and we work with our customers in selecting matings and furthering their programs through our embryos and pregnancies. The genetics represented in our herd are strong in maternal and performance values and are the kind to move a program forward.
